What is Pickle ball ?

Pickleball is a simple wooden paddle game played with a slow moving Wiffle ball over a tennis type net, on a court the size of a badminton court. Pickleball was originated at the home of Joel Pritchard in Seattle, Washington, in 1965. "The game began as a family activity when Mr. Pritchard and his houseguest, Bill Bell, discovered that there wasn't enough good badminton equipment for the two families to play" (Jisedu). After modifying the rules and replacing the old rackets with wooden paddles, they developed this new game and called in Pickleball. The name came from the Pritchard's cocker spaniel, Pickles, who ran off with the Wiffle ball every time it landed off the court. Pickleball slowly spread among neighbors and friends, and in 1972 a corporation was formed to protect the new game, so no one could steal the idea. During the 1970's the popularity of the game grew in the Seattle area, where it was used in high school and college P.E. classes, the park, and other recreational areas. Later on, "the originator's United States Pickleball Association and state and national physical education conventions promoted Pickleball" (Jisedu). Today it is played throughout the United States, Canada, and in a few other countries.

Pickle Ball Court Size

A pickleball court is around the same size as a doubles badminton court and measures 44 feet long (inclusive of lines) and 20 feet wide (inclusive of lines). The net height is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches high in the middle. Similar to a tennis court, a pickleball court is striped with right and left service courts and a 7-foot non-volley zone in front of the net, which is referred to as the kitchen.

HOW TO PLAY PICKLEBALL / RULES OF PICKLEBALL?

Although pickleball is played on a court, the rules of the game more closely resemble table tennis or badminton than traditional tennis.

  • The game begins with one side serving the pickleball, using the paddle (which is wood or composite and larger than a ping pong paddle) to hit the pickleball (which is a light, plastic, hole-covered whiffle ball).

  • To properly serve the ball, the player must keep one foot behind the backline and strike the ball with an underhand swing, aiming at the service court located diagonally over the net, and clearing the no-volley zone.

  • Service starts from the right-hand court. Only one fault is allowed.

  • In the case of doubles, both players get to serve once, and then the serve is taken over by the opposing team.

  • Both sides must allow the pickleball to bounce first before hitting it with the paddle at least one time from the start of the game. Thereafter, players may volley the ball (hit it without allowing it to bounce), provided they are not within the no-volley zone within seven feet of the net (marked on the court).

  • A player or team scores points only when they are serving. A pickleball game is played to 11 points and a win must be by two points.
